The Town of BWG has a tradition of recognizing and honouring the outstanding contributions of local citizens and groups through the presentation of Civic Awards. This ceremony is held annually on July 1st, coinciding with the Canada Day Celebrations, and takes place on the Main Stage at the Bradford and District Memorial Community Centre. It is a highly anticipated event that acknowledges the hard work and dedication of individuals and organizations and their significant contributions to our community.
To be eligible for the Civic Awards, the nominee must be a resident, group or organization located within our community, and must not have received the same award previously.
The contributions made by the nominee must have a positive impact on the community and must been made between May 1st of the previous year and April 30th of the current year. In order to evaluate the merits of the nomination, specific examples and descriptions of the contributions made are required.
The Council may choose to present more than one award in a particular category or may decide not to present an award in a category if eligible nominations are not received.

The Citizen of the Year Award
The Citizen of the Year award is available for individuals who are 18 years or older, regardless of gender. This award is given to someone who has made significant and consistent contributions to the Bradford West Gwillimbury community for at least five years. The recipient of this award must be actively engaged in various groups, organizations, and town activities, and is known for being kind and friendly.
The Junior Citizen of the Year Award
The Junior Citizen of the Year award is presented to an individual who is under 18 years old, regardless of gender. The award recognizes the recipient’s noteworthy contributions to our community, as well as recognized academic achievements in school. In addition, the recipient is known for their active participation in various clubs and teams, as well as their frequent volunteering effort
The Senior of the Year Award
The Senior of the Year award recognizes an individual aged 55 or above, regardless of gender. The award is presented to someone who has made significant contributions to the community of Bradford West Gwillimbury for at least five years. The recipient is actively involved in a wide range of groups, clubs, organizations, and town activities, and is renowned for being a community champion.
The Volunteer of the Year Award
The Volunteer of the Year award is open to all genders and age groups. To be eligible for the award, the recipient must have volunteered for at least five years with an organization/s that supports the Bradford West Gwillimbury community, without receiving any profits for their time. It is recommended that the nominator provides a letter of recommendation outlining the candidate’s volunteer efforts.
The Bravery Award
The Bravery Award is open to individuals of all genders and age groups. This award recognizes acts of heroism or bravery that involve attempting to save the life of a person or animal, saving the life of a person or animal, providing first aid, or preventing harm.
The Sports Achievement Award
The Sports Achievement Award recognizes individual amateur athletes of all genders and ages who have accomplished significant feats in their respective sports. These accomplishments include improvements, setting records, winning championships at local, provincial, national, or international levels, representing Ontario at a national level, and representing Canada at an international level. The award celebrates the recipient’s dedication, hard work, and success in their sport.
The Sports Team of the Year Award
The Sports Team of the Year award is open to all types of sports teams, with no age restrictions. To be eligible for the award, the team must be from Bradford West Gwillimbury or have a majority of players from the community. The team should have made notable achievements, such as improvements, record-setting, and finishing in first, second, or third place at local, provincial, or national levels. The award celebrates the team’s collective efforts and accomplishments in their sport.
The Organization of the Year Award
The Organization of the Year award is presented to a for-profit or not-for-profit organization that operates within Bradford West Gwillimbury. This organization must be established and widely recognized in our community and must have made significant contributions through volunteer service and/or sponsorship. The award recognizes the organization’s outstanding commitment to improving our community and enhancing the lives of its residents.
